Is food sensitivity testing worth it?
Food sensitivity testing can be helpful in identifying whether or not you have an intolerance or allergy to a specific food, although it is important to note that the popular blood tests used for testing food sensitivities in general are not shown to be particularly accurate in diagnosing whether you are intolerant to a food or not. Allergists recommend, typically, the use of an elimination diet and then an exposure to try and diagnose whether your have a food sensitivity to a particular food or food group – such as dairy products.
However, food sensitivities can have a negative effect on your overall health and well-being. If you feel that these are interfering with your day-to-day activities and are keeping you from living your best life, then you may consider undergoing testing for food sensitivities. If you decide to do so, it is recommended that you seek out a trained specialist in the medical field – an allergist – as they can guide you through the process and provide you with advice on how to manage or treat your food sensitivities.
Does drinking water help an allergic reaction?
Histamines, which are responsible for allergic reactions, also help with the regulation of your body’s water supply. If your body is dehydrated or if you are not drinking enough water, then histamine production acts as a defense to preserve the water that remains within your body. If you are dehydrated, then the production of histamines increases, which can trigger similar symptoms to those of seasonal allergies.
Drinking water and staying hydrated can help with preventing elevated histamine production and will help with alleviating allergy symptoms. Additionally, dehydration can cause your skin to dry out which can cause itching, scaling, and cracking on your face, hands and feet – which can be alleviated if you take the time and energy to keep yourself properly hydrated.
What are three symptoms of a food allergy?
There are several symptoms that you may experience if you suffer from or have a food allergy. These may include:
- Skin irritations, such as hives, itching, or eczema;
- Swelling of your lips, face, tongue, throat, or other parts of your body;
- Difficulty or trouble breathing, feelings of lightheadedness or dizziness.
These are not the only symptoms that you may experience, as it’s also common to experience abdominal pain, diarrhea, nausea, or vomiting if you ingest a food that you are allergic to. These symptoms can manifest anywhere between a few minutes to two hours after ingesting the offending food stuff.
If your food allergy is severe enough, then ingesting the food can trigger a severe allergic reaction which is known as anaphylaxis, which can cause life-threatening symptoms, which may include:
- Tightening or constriction of the airway;
- A swollen throat or the feeling of having a lump in your throat that makes it difficult for you to breathe;
- Shock, including a severe drop in your blood pressure;
- A rapid pulse;
- Dizziness, lightheadedness, or a loss of consciousness.
Anaphylaxis requires immediate emergency medical treatment as, if left untreated, it can cause you to fall into a coma or even your death.
